My road started at Robert E Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama where I played football from 1985-1987. I knew I wanted to play college football but was not offered any scholarships but I ended up walking on at McMurry and celebrated my successes, but at the same time I was in constant pursuit of making it to a professional level.
In 1992, as a junior, I declared myself eligible to enter into the NFL draft. Draft day was very hard for me because we had plans of being drafted in the mid - to late rounds and it didn’t happen and I thought my dream was crushed. But a call to the San Francisco 49ers gave me a little hope. I ended up signing with the Fresno bandits, in pacific Football league, where I led the league two years in a row averaging 8 interceptions a year. After my career there I got my first contract in the Arena Football League. I ended up playing with the Orlando Predators and the Cleveland Thunderbolts. From there I went to Germany for a season with the European League and then to the CFL (San Antonio Texans – practice squad). After several years in a few different leagues I knew that I developed into a pretty good corner back. My next challenge was to try to get back to the NFL. So one day my wife and I drove from San Antonio to Houston to meet with the Houston Oilers. They ended up giving me a chance but things just didn’t work out so I kept on trying to get on with other teams like Green Bay, Dallas and Buffalo, but sometimes you have to realize that the NFL isn’t the only football league around. I spent a few years after that time not playing at all until my road led me back to the Arena Football League where I ended up playing with San Jose, New Jersey and Dallas. |
